In 1919 ging in New York de stomme film Auction of Souls in première, over een tienermeisje dat de Armeense genocide overleefde en naar Amerika vluchtte. De hoofdrol werd gespeeld door de overlevende in kwestie: Aurora Mardiganian. De film bleek een kassucces en Mardiganian werd wereldberoemd. Intussen gingen de moordpartijen in Armenië nog steeds door en Mardiganian werd bijna verzwolgen door traumatische herbelevingen, aangezwengeld door de hardvochtige publiciteitsmolen van Hollywood. Toch koos ze ervoor om het gezicht te zijn van een humanitaire campagne, in de hoop haar volk te redden.
